Daniel W. Donnelly, of Smithtown, NY, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2025, after a long and courageous journey with dementia and a recent diagnosis of colon cancer. He was 84 years old.

Born on January 12, 1941, in the Bronx, Daniel lived a life defined by service, perseverance, and an enduring love for his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Linda, just three months shy of their 60th wedding anniversary; his beloved children, Jill (Harry), Jennifer, and Daniel (Michelle); seven cherished grandchildren—Courtney (Richard), Nicole (David), Zachary, Morgan, Liam, Reese, and Dillon; and three treasured great-grandchildren—Molly, Madeline, and Charlie.

Daniel was most proud of his work as a police officer—a role that reflected his deep commitment to helping others and building relationships with people from all backgrounds. His approach to policing was marked by compassion, dedication, and an unwavering sense of duty to his community.

After retiring from the force due to disability, Daniel spent three cherished years as a stay-at-home dad before pursuing a bold new goal: becoming a lawyer. He went on to receive his undergraduate degree from Stony Brook University and graduated from Touro Law School. After passing the bar, he served as the assistant town prosecutor in Smithtown and later as the elected Highway Superintendent—continuing his lifelong mission of serving the public.

Though his career was marked by impressive accomplishments, it was Daniel's energy, warmth, and genuine love for people that left the greatest impact. He was a man of immense generosity—always willing to help others, often putting their needs before his own. He would give you the shirt off his back without a second thought and never hesitated to lend a hand, no matter the circumstance.

His circle of friends was vast, a testament to his magnetic spirit and generous heart. His work ethic was tireless, his toughness admirable, and his positivity unmatched.

An avid outdoorsman, Daniel loved to hunt and fish—but nothing brought him more joy than time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, who were the light of his life.

Daniel leaves behind a legacy of integrity, determination, love, generosity, and laughter. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
