Martin Rein Hakker 76 yrs. young of St. James, New York After receiving the devastating diagnosis of B cell Lymphocytic Leukemia in October 2020, Martin optimistically encouraged his family, "Don't worry about me, I'm going to float through this like I have with everything in my life". To the shock of all on March 10, 2021, Martin passed away at home surrounded by his family. Marty as he was known by many, was born in Syosset, New York and was a true Long Islander. He was a proud Graduate of St. Dominic's High School in Oyster Bay (class of 1960), raised his children in Huntington, lived and sailed in Asharoken / Northport and eventually settled in St. James. Marty had a 50-year career on Wall Street where he was an entrepreneur specializing in software development and designing trading systems. Colleagues that knew Marty described him as a visionary in every respect and humble at the same time. Throughout his life he traveled and worked internationally making friends all along the way. Marty was an avid golfer and sailor and known to be an expert at the grill. He was a history buff and spent numerous evenings sharing his knowledge and assisting his grandchildren with their homework. He was enthusiastic and generous with his tools and his time when someone was in need. More recently Marty settled in St. James with his partner of 21 years, Colleen Askinas. Together they were fortunate to spend quality time with her daughter Lauren, her husband Jay Gearino and granddaughter Brooklyn, who brought continuous light and laughter into his daily life. Marty will be remembered for his infectious laugh, countless efforts of generosity that have touched so many people that had the pleasure to know him.
