Agueda L. Alonso
Agueda (Lula) Alonso was born on February 5, 1930, in Cardenas, Cuba to Gregorio Lopez Gonzalez and Maria de los Angeles Herrera Diaz. Lula was the oldest of her three siblings Otmara, Nicolas, and Maria. She grew up by the ocean and spent her early years swimming and rowing at Varadero Beach. As a stellar student she went on to study at the University of Havana, Cuba where she received her PhD in Physics & Chemistry. She worked as a Chemist for Avon Cosmetics in Cuba. During her time at the University of Havana, she met her loving husband of 52 years, Hilario Alonso, a CPA. They resided in Havana, Cuba and they were blessed with two children, Hilario (Larry) and Pablo. She valued education and instilled that into her children.
In May 1967, the family moved away from the lights of Havana to a new suburban community in Stony Brook, NY. Moving from the big city to suburbia was challenging at first but, Hilario and Lula made many friends and embraced their new life. Upon their retirement, Hilario and Lula spent many enjoyable years in Miami by the beach-just like their life back in Cuba with family and friends.
Lula enjoyed looking her best no matter how formal or informal the occasion, spending time with her grandchildren, playing dominoes, cooking authentic Cuban meals, music and dancing.
Lula was predeceased by her husband Hilario, sisters Otmara Garcia, Maria de los Angeles Lopez and brother Nicolas Lopez. She is survived by her two sons Hilario (Kathleen) and Pablo. She has four grandchildren Amanda (Evan), Gregory, Matthew and Hilary plus a great-grandson Luke and a great-granddaughter on the way!
