Arthur L. Schaeffler

Arthur “Art” Schaeffler passed away on June 11, 2026 at the age of 81.  Born on July 2, 1944 Art lived a life defined by faith, family, music, and service to others.

Art was the beloved husband of the late Ruth Schaeffler (Cranmer) who predeceased him in December 2023. Together they shared a lifetime of love, adventure, and partnership, traveling the world and creating cherished memories with family and friends. Together since they were high school sweethearts and married for 58 years, theirs was a true love story. 

He is survived by his loving children, Kris; David (Beth); and Amy (Brian). He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Matthew, Andrew (Sara), Ryan (Darby), Jack, Anna, Nicholas, and Nathan. Being a grandfather was one of Art’s greatest joys. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, especially playing golf with the boys, cheering them on in their activities, celebrating their accomplishments, and, whenever possible, spoiling them a little. He was their biggest supporter and one of their most trusted sources of encouragement and advice.

Art dedicated his professional life to education as a music teacher first in Wyandanch School District  and then taught and was an administrator in Bayport-Blue Point School  District.  He inspired generations of students through his passion for music and his belief in the potential of every child. His love for the arts extended beyond the school year through his work as an administrator at  Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts, where he helped nurture creativity and artistic excellence in countless young people.

Music was the soundtrack of Art’s life. While he appreciated all genres, jazz held a special place in his heart. Whether listening, teaching, or sharing music with others, he believed in its power to connect people and enrich lives.

Outside of music, Art was a loyal fan of the New York Yankees, New York Knicks, and New York Rangers. He enjoyed golf and tennis and loved the camaraderie, competition, and friendships that came with them.

Those who knew Art will remember his warm heart, unwavering dependability, and wonderful sense of humor. He was known for his corny dad jokes, which never failed to bring a smile—or an eye roll—from those around him. Beneath the humor was a wise and steady presence, someone family, friends, colleagues, and students could always count on. He listened, encouraged, guided, and showed up whenever he was needed.

A man of Lutheran faith, Art lived with kindness, humility, generosity, and compassion. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the students he inspired, the music he shared, and the countless lives he touched through his caring heart.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know and love him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Art’s honor to the Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts, celebrating his passion for nurturing young artists, or to Calvary Lutheran Church, a community that reflected the faith and values that guided his life
