Catherine N. Schulz – Obituary
Catherine N. Schulz of Saint James, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025 at the age of 89.
“A thing of beauty is a joy forever . . . .” – John Keats
Catherine loved this line from Keat’s poem, Endymion, and recited it frequently throughout her life. It was a reminder that beauty, in all its forms - a flower, a child at play, a crisp autumn day - is an enduring source of joy both in its experience as well as in memory. Catherine appreciated all beauty and held it within her heart.
Catherine truly loved her family and her home. She took special joy in watching her grandchildren play during the holidays and do art projects at her kitchen table, which she proudly displayed as masterpieces in her home.
Catherine was born in the Bronx on November 3, 1935 to Catherine Norris (Haas) and Thomas Norris. She was raised in Flushing and later Jackson Heights, Queens. Catherine graduated from Queens College in 1958 with a degree in Sociology and went on to receive a MastersDegree in Social Work from Hunter College. Over the course of her career Catherine held variouspositions, but her favorite was her first one at The New York Foundling in Manhattan. There, Catherine worked with abandoned children whose parents were unable to support them. She sought to locate extended family members who could provide a stable and loving home for each child. Her searches were often lengthy and arduous, yetthe success of her child placement efforts was unmatched. In 1960, while at The Foundling,Catherine met George, who would become her loving husband in July 1962. In 1965 they moved from Queens to Commack NY where they purchased their first home and began family life with two daughters, and then moved to Saint James in 1978, where Catherine lived for the next 47 years.
Catherine is survived by her loving husband, George, her two daughters, Jennifer (John, predeceased) and Christina (Lisa), and four grandchildren, Will, Faith, Dylan and Tyler. She also leaves behind two of her three brothers, Robert and Charles, as her brother Thomas predeceased her.
