Donald Hagen Obituary

Donald Theodore Hagen, 85, of Hempstead, New York, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2023 in Stony Brook, New York. He was born on March 16, 1938, and was the only child of Dagfin and Alice Hagen (Olsen).

Donald will be remembered for his love of family, his happy go lucky nature and strong sense of duty. A significant part of his life was his time in the Navy. Donald proudly served his country from 1956 - 1968 on the USS Gearing and USS Essex. He frequently spoke of this experience and the places he traveled. His time in the service gave him the training to ultimately pursue a career as a licensed electrician at the Northport V.A. Hospital. Additionally, he was elected Chief Stewart of his union. He believed strongly in defending the rights of those whose liberties and equity were violated. He retired from the Veterans Administration and was commended for his 50 years of federal service.

Donald is survived by his three children, Barbara Jeanne and her husband Charles Bassani,  Michael  Theodore and his wife Lisa (nee Ericksson), and James Francis Hagen. He very much enjoyed and was proud of his 5 grandchildren; Brandon, Brianna, Charlie, Melanie and Cooper. He is also survived by his former wife Kathleen Grace Messina with whom he remained friends throughout his lifetime.

To those whose lives he has touched, he leaves a legacy that inspires us to be tolerant; to enjoy the  pleasures and opportunities which life offers and to allow others to do the same.

With gratitude and affection, May he rest in eternal peace.

The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Long Island State Veterans Home at LISVH.org.
