Helen Oros Obituary

Helen Oros was born on Dec.27,1924 in New York City. Helen lived in New York City for many years but spent most of her life in Smithtown,. She lived in the same house for over 60 years!             Helen was the daughter of Anton and Theresa Stratil . Her dad was a baker and he opened a bakery shop in Manhattan . Mom would often talk of the many hours she spent helping her folks in the shop where they would serve a full lunch or dinner for 25 cents even on Christmas Day! It was particularly hard on her when she had to spend her birthday there which was only 2 days after Christmas. But at least the delicious birthday cake was free and lovingly made by her baker parents.! By that time, her Mom had become a super baker, herself!

After graduation from high school, Helen met her husband in the "hood" She married him during World War 11. She raised her kids, Diane and Mike in the city and then she and my dad moved to the country for fresher air and space. Also, her parents moved to St.James and she wanted to be closer to them. After moving to Smithtown ,she continued her work as a medical secretary and worked for many years. She also worked in New York Hospital before the move to the country and was able to walk there from her apartment. After she retired, she worked in Middle Country School District as a "foster' grandma until she was 90 years old. Mom was a remarkable lady. After retiring at 90, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends as well as continuing her favorite hobby, SHOPPING!  Her surviving family members are her children, Diane and Michael, her grandchildren Lara and Greg as well as her twin great grandsons, Ben and Ethan. Visitation is at the St. James Funeral Home on June 13th from 2-4 and from 7-9 .A funeral mass will be held at 10:15 at St,Philip and James Church in St. James. Burial will follow at Calverton National Cemetary.
