John Hansemann Obituary


Hansemann, John,F of Stony Brook & St.Thomas USVI was called to his eternal home in the early morning of Saturday,April 18th 2020.
John was born April 19th 1936 at Mineola Hospital,now Winthrop Hospital, to Frederic Hansemann & Louise Schwanemann Hansemann. He was an honor graduate of Sewannika HS and obtained his degree in architecture from Ohio University.After graduation he fulfilled his military obligation serving in Germany. Returning home he spent time traveling the US visiting friends from coast to coast while amateur racing his motorcycle.
Upon his return to NY he began what was to be an interim position, prior to opening his own practice,with Suffolk County’s Department of Buildings & Grounds in 1964.The interim position became a thirty six year career with John serving as county architect from 1976 through December 1999.
In 1977 John married his wife of 43 yrs. Wanda Recchia- Hansemann and settled in Stony Brook.
John enjoyed photography and was an avid sailor and yachtsman. He & Wanda spent many a summer enjoying the waters between LI & Vinyard Haven Ma. They traveled the world with friends and enjoyed their winter haven in St.Thomas.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his stepson Steven Guardala and numerous nieces & nephews: Chris Poelker &Cara Bonuso, Herb &Kristena Gluth, Norma&John Wingo, Tina&Bob Navas, Katherine Nero @ their families & numerous friends he called family.
In honoring John’s wishes there will be no service. Cremation will be private. A celebration of Life will be held at a latter date.
