Ronkonkoma resident Margaret Nahaczewski, age 101, passed away peacefully at her home on May 7, 2023. Margaret was born at home in Long Island City on November 15, 1921 to James and Josephine Prudente. She was predeceased by her parents, six of her siblings(Katie DeMita, Marty Prudente, Joe Prudente, Fanny Sensenbach, Rose Sensenbach, and James Prudente) and her husband, Stephen Nahaczewski who died in 1997.
Margaret grew up in Long Island City and Astoria, Queens. She attended the local parochial school and Queens Vocational High School. During the Depression and in the World War II years she helped support her family by working in the garment industry. Margaret and Stephen were married April 28, 1946 and after the birth of their first child they moved to Brentwood LI. She continued to work as a seamstress while raising her two children with the loving help of her husband. Sewing was a favorite activity at home as well and she made beautiful outfits for herself and her daughters.
Margaret and Steve moved to Ronkonkoma in 1993 where they joined the Ronkonkoma Senior Center. They enjoyed many of the activities there and also traveled to attend reunions of Steve’s army division. A highlight was a trip to Italy to visit the places where the division faced combat with the Germans. After Steve’s death she continued to attend the senior center serving as secretary for many years, and participating in line dancing, luncheons and her favorite bingo. She continued to sew for fun making most of her clothes. She also loved to read, especially romance novels. Margaret kept up with the news, and never missed voting which she considered her civic duty.
Margaret is survived by her daughters Maggie (Greg Marszewski) and Cathy (Tony Notaroberta); her grandchildren Karen, Phillip, Anthony and Nicole; five great grandchildren; her brother Wally Prudente of Garner NC; numerous nieces and nephews, and her many friends from the Ronkonkoma Center, especially Flo, Romana and Charlene.
Our mom wanted everyone to know that she lived a long and happy life with no regrets. Services at St. James Funeral Home on Friday May 12 from 9-12. Private burial to follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
