With great sadness, we share the news that Margaret Louise “Peggy” Tomasicchio (nee Hart), passed away on January 26, 2021, aged 79. She had been in ill health for many years, but Covid-19 struck the final blow.
Peggy was born on October 22, 1941 in Mineola and grew up in Oceanside. After graduating from Oceanside High School in 1959, she earned her Teaching Degree from SUNY Oswego and her Master’s Degree from Hofstra University. She taught at the elementary level in the Fire Island School District for many years.
In 1971, she married widower Michael Tomasicchio and became mother to his two young children. After discovering they couldn’t have children of their own, Peggy and Mike decided to open their hearts and home to children in need by becoming foster parents. Over the course of her life, Peggy fostered over 60 children and adopted ten.
Peggy was passionate about helping children and devoted countless hours to the Suffolk County Foster Parent Advisory Council (F-Pac), where she served as President and developed training programs for new foster parents. She also worked for the Three Villages School District to help establish programs for preschoolers with disabilities.
Peggy and her husband Mike were recognized by Suffolk County Social Services for extraordinary service to the foster care program in 1982. In 2003, Peggy was recognized nationally, when she was a recipient of the Congressional Angels in Adoption Award, presented at the Capitol in Washington, DC.
Peggy is survived by her twelve children: Matt (Bridget), Karen Steinbart (Rich), Mandy Hazzard, Dan (Lisa), Danielle, Dorice, Shantashia, Raymond, Mark, Cam’Ren, Dee Dee and Diamond.
Peggy was preceded in death by her loving husband Mike, her parents, Augustus and Lillian Hart, and her brother Bill Hart. Besides her children, she leaves behind seventeen grandchildren and two great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
