Mary was the daughter of Irish immigrants William and Bridget Sweeney, and proud of her heritage. She married her sweetheart, Edward Malkus just ten days shy of her nineteenth birthday. They were partners for over 67 years. She was a loving mother to their daughters, Carol and Jeanne; the proud grandmother of Stephen, Justin, William Peter, Ruthann and Mary; and great-grandmother of Lucy and Nora. Mary made a habit of seeking ways to improve the lives of others, and she taught her family how to make the most of every opportunity. Mary had an eye for beauty and knew the difference between fad and fashion as evidenced by the way she decorated her home and led her family playing "musical bushes": rearranging the landscape plants each time she moved. She took great pleasure in the splendor of nature: visiting the beach or the mountains, bathing in a stream, seeing a newborn calf at a fair or the deer outside her window. Mary put as much enthusiasm into dancing the "Stack of Barley" with relatives in her living room as she did into ballroom dancing on social occasions. Her presence will be missed by her family, but the values and life lessons she passed on will remain with us always.
