It is with deep sorrow we mourn the passing of Melvin Yee, a wonderful husband, father, son, brother, coworker and friend.
Melvin was born and raised in Astoria, Queens to parents Sau Moon Yee and Harry Quel Yul Yee. He was a mischievous boy who had many escapades with his brothers and friends including squirting passersby from the second story window with his water gun and playing tag on the school roof. He was the fastest boy in his school and raced everyone who would challenge him. He was a competitive basketball player and played for hours all over Queens and Manhattan.
Mel was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School and CUNY-Bernard M. Baruch College where he studied accounting and he later became a CPA.
Mel worked in the accounting/tax field for over 30 years and was the Tax Director at Liquidnet Holdings, Inc. for the last 11 years. He had a strong work ethic but also made time for light-hearted fun, including bicycle races in the office with the folding bike he used to commute, bourbon tastings and guitar playing.
He moved to St. James to raise his family. He always felt proud that a kid from the City with humble beginnings had a home in the suburbs to call his own. Nothing made him happier than grilling for his family and enjoying a glass of wine and a cigar in the garden.
Mel was a passionate photographer, loved to travel and was a master grill/smoker cook. Physical fitness was important to him. He trained regularly and even took parkour classes with his children for a couple of years. He brought laughter and joy to every relationship he had. He went nowhere without making a friend.
He is survived by his wife, Lauraine Anne Pell-Yee, his daughter Jacque Moon Yee and his son Jude Harrison Yee. He is also survived by his five brothers William (June), Irvin (Celeste), Garry (Lorraine), Milton (Babara), Herman (Jacquetta) and three sisters Margaret Tong (Gary), Lorraine Kuo (Wei), and Evelyn Poy (Cliff).
He is also survived by mother-in-law and father-in-law, Anne and Jack Pell, sister-in-law Jeanne (Pell) Sandler and brother-in-law John Pell (Lisa), and 23 nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Agahozo Shalom Youth Village (ASYV), a cause that he was involved with and passionate about.
