Phyllis Steffek Obituary

Phyllis Steffek passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family, leaving behind a lifetime of memories filled with strength, laughter, resilience, and deep devotion to the people she loved most.

Phyllis lived life fully and on her own terms. She was practical, honest, funny, and fiercely independent in a way that made everyone around her smile. Even as recently as last fall, she could still be found happily driving her beloved tractor around the yard, determined to keep doing things herself. Her independence was legendary. If she couldn’t get the gas cap off the tractor, she would stubbornly track down a neighbor for help rather than let it defeat her for even a minute.

She worked at Suffolk County Community College until she was 80 years old, where she became a familiar and beloved presence to students, staff, and coworkers alike. Through her years in food service management, she cared for people the same way she cared for her family — by making sure everyone was fed, supported, and looked after. She worked hard her entire life and took enormous pride in doing things well.

Outside of work, Phyllis found happiness in the simple but meaningful parts of life. She loved gardening, horses, cooking, family gatherings, and sitting around talking with the people she cared about. Her home and her presence always made people feel welcome.

One of the places closest to her heart was St. Margaret of Scotland Roman Catholic Church. She found comfort, friendship, and joy there for many years. She especially loved the time after Mass when she and her dear friends would linger together laughing, talking, and “shooting the breeze” long after services ended. The clergy lovingly nicknamed their group “The Bus Stop” because once the ladies gathered together, everyone knew they would be there for quite a while enjoying each other’s company.

Phyllis was predeceased by her beloved husband, Leonard J. Steffek, with whom she shared a long and loving life together. She is survived by her children Leonard, Stephanie, and Andrew; her cherished grandchildren Timothy, Taylor, Natasha, Nicholai, Alexander, Jackie, and Nichole; her great-grandchildren; and many extended family members, neighbors, and lifelong friends who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.

She will be remembered for her warmth, her humor, her determination, and the unconditional love she gave so naturally to the people around her. She taught her family the value of hard work, loyalty, and showing up for the people you love. Her stories, her laugh, and her spirit will continue to live on in every family gathering, every garden planted, and every long conversation shared among friends.
