Salvatore Joseph Acello, age 83, of St. James, New York, died March 24, 2018 at St. James Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Happily married to Patricia Ann (Parsons) Acello for 58 years, he was born on July 21, 1934 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Joseph Acello and Pasqualena (Patinella) Acello. A retired Vice President of Quality at General Instrument Corporation in Hicksville, NY, he resided at St. James for 45 years.
A veteran of the Korean War, Sal acted as a Staff Sergeant and played in the USAF Marching Band, where he played for several US Presidents. He also played with the Savanah Symphony Orchestra in Georgia. Sal was Honorably Discharged in September 1960. He went on to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he achieved both a Batchelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree, where he was followed by his brother John Acello and his son Stephen Acello.
Sal was a dedicated woodworker and made much of the furniture in his home. His hobbies also included Radio Control model airplanes, fishing, gardening, cooking, and teaching.
Sal was a Freemason and member of Lafayette Lodge of Cumberland Rhode Island, having affiliated with the lodge in 2012. He was made a Mason at Lafayette Greylock Lodge in North Adams, MA in 1970.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Stephen Joseph, of Cumberland, Rhode Island and two daughters, JoAnn Acello Cohen of Weston, Connecticut, and Christine Marie (Acello) Mandleur, of Wading River, New York, two granddaughters, Kathryn Anne (Acello) Leonard of Wayland, MA and Abigail Elizabeth Cohen of Weston CT, and four grandsons, Daniel Stephen Acello and Paul Salvatore Acello of Cumberland RI, Christopher Joseph Mandleur and Matthew Peter Mandleur of Wading River NY, and one great granddaughter, Nora Rose Leonard, of Wayland, MA. He is survived by two brothers, Joseph Acello of Ronkonkoma, NY and John Acello of Rochester NY, and one sister, Sylvia (Acello) Austin of Massapequa NY. He was predeceased by his sister Carmen (Acello) Henkel of Greenlawn, NY.
Celebrations of Life were held at St. James Funeral Home at 2 and 7PM on April 8th, and a service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance was held at 10:30 in the morning on April 9, 2018 at St. James Lutheran Church, 230 Second Ave., St. James, NY.
