Sophie Corso Obituary

Sophie Corso, age 95, born and raised on the lower east side of Manhattan, on Rivington Street, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.  Sophie raised three children: Denise (Tony), Joseph (Maria), and Peter (Rose Marie).  She was a proud and devoted Grandmother to six grandchildren: Anthony (Alessandra), Joseph (Erin), Michael (Anja), Gina (John), Nicholas and Sophia.  Sophie was a loving Great Grandmother to nine great grandchildren: Maggie (17), Matthew (15), Ava (15), Aria (13), Jack (12), Adriana (12), Ryan (11), Jacob (7) and Grace (5).

Sophie’s most treasured memories were those that were spent with her family.  Life revolved around her parents, Josie and John, and of course, her beloved brothers, Sonny, Mikey, Johnnyboy and Petey and her beloved sister, Boopsie (Barbara). Sophie and her siblings loved each other so deeply and unconditionally, and they made sure to look after each other too.

Sophie learned to cook at a young age and was always asked if her delicious red sauce and meatballs, spinach pies or rice pudding would make it to the table for special family events.  We all thought she would have been able to retire in her 50’s, if she just shared her delicious creations with the world, as we know they would have loved it too!

Sophie’s favorite meal was pasta and she would often comment how she could eat pasta every night of the week…made all different ways, of course!

Sophie was very hard-working. She would comment how at a very young age she would iron her brothers’ dress shirts or how she would start dinner for her siblings and parents.  She was always doing or making something.  And if you saw Sophie sitting, which was the exception rather than the rule, she had her cross-word puzzle in her hand or her reading book.

Some of Sophie’s happiest times were spent vacationing with family at some of her favorite places – Reitzens bungalow colony in upstate New York, Paradise Island in the Bahamas and the island of Capri in Italy.  Great times for sure!

Sophie was an independent person too.  She was 75 years old and still working at the Walmart in Delray Beach, Florida in the Pharmacy Department.  She always spoke about how happy she was working at Walmart because it gave her a great sense of satisfaction and pride.  Sophie wanted the added independence of having her own driver’s license. So wouldn’t you know, Sophie got her driver’s license at the ripe “old” age of 65!!  We were all so happy and proud of her!

Throughout her whole life, Sophie deeply cared for others and was always there if you needed a helping hand. Sophie was so much to so many people - a beloved mother and mother-in-law, a loving grandmother and great grandma, a favorite aunt and a hero, too.  Rest in Eternal Peace Sophie, until we see you again.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Boys Town and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, two not-for-profit organizations Sophie held near and dear to her heart.
