Sylvia Quenstedt

St. James resident Sylvia Quenstedt, age 100, passed away peacefully at her home on May 6, 2023. Sylvia was born in her grandmother’s house in Gillette, New Jersey, on October 28,1922 to Stella and Salvatore Abbene. She was predeceased by her husband Rudolf Quenstedt who died in 1996, and her two siblings Lillian Cunningham and Adelaide Ferguson.

Sylvia grew up in Astoria Queens, and during World War II worked for New York Quinine. She was engaged to Rudolf Quenstedt during the war and they were married on November 17, 1946. They lived in an apartment in Astoria until 1950 at which time they bought their house in East Meadow and raised their three sons.

Sylvia and Rudy moved to St. James in 1986, residing in the small but comfortable house her father-in-law built in 1941. Sylvia loved to cook, bake, crochet, read books and loved her St James Lutheran Church where she served on the Altar Guild, and was part of the Senior Women’s group, where she made numerous friends. Oh, and she was a BIG New York Yankees fan and would never miss a game on TV.

Sylvia is survived by her sons Kenneth (Martha), Brian (Marie-deceased), Douglas (Teresa); her grandchildren Scott, Kerrin, Kimberly, Stella, Jaclyn and Chris; and eight great grandchildren.
