John K. Zung passed away in Stony Brook, NY on January 5, 2018. 

John was born on November 5, 1936 in Shanghai, China where he lived with his parents, Sze-Yen Zung and Zer-Fung Cheng Zung, and sisters, Jeanne and Carole. They later lived in Hong Kong until they left for Cuba in 1952, and later settled in the United States.  John attended Johns Hopkins University and through friends met his future wife Virginia (Ginger), who was attending Towson College. They married in 1958. 

John worked for Quotron Corporation (later acquired by Citibank) in New York City for almost his entire career and retired from Citibank in 1995.

John is survived by his wife Virginia (Ginger) Zung, sisters Jeanne Chiao and Carole Chen, son John R. Zung, grandchildren Davis Zung and Jennifer Gee, daughter-in-law Mary Ellen Zung, and son-in-law Phillip Gee, as well as many nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by his parents and loving daughter Sabrina. 

A visitation will be held at St. James Funeral Home, 829 Middle Country Road, Route 25, St. James, NY 11780 on Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Setauket EMS and/or the American Cancer Society. 

Ginger and family thank their neighbors and many friends near and far for their love and support through the years, especially to Bobby Sharkey, Kathleen Palmeri (née Irmscher), Mario Palmeri, and Eric Heagle, who were so supportive during Johns’ illness.

John was always curious from an early age about many studies including archeology, anthropology, engineering and world religions. He enjoyed reading, solving crossword and Sudoku puzzles, and regularly played bridge during his commute on the Long Island Rail Road.  But John was most passionate about cooking and sharing his knowledge of food, so much that he became good friends with the local grocers, butcher, fish monger, and bakers in town. Those who spoke with him would almost always learn something new from any conversation with John.  We will carry his memory in our hearts.
